Why do cats sleep so much?

Cats undoubtedly love to rest, but there’s more to their indulgence in sleep than meets the eye. Cats spend an average of 16–20 hours a day sleeping, but why do cats sleep so much?

Cat Sleep Patterns

While many cats are active at night (especially kittens), their species is actually classified as crepuscular, meaning they are most active at dawn and dusk. This behavior is rooted in their natural survival instincts, as other predators typically hunt late at night or during the day.

Newborn kittens often sleep up to 24 hours a day, growing as they nurse and sleep continuously. As kittens mature, their need for sleep decreases to an average of 16 hours per day. However, sleep cycles can increase again as cats reach old age.

Cats are highly adaptable, and many adjust their sleep schedules to spend time with their favorite humans. They also align their sleep patterns with feeding times.

Hunting Instinct

Even if your cat is a pampered indoor pet, their primal instincts still shine through occasionally. Wild cats expend an extraordinary amount of energy hunting and need to rest afterward. Thus, one of the main reasons cats sleep so much is tied to their innate behavior as hunters.

Energy Conservation Mode

Members of the feline family are also well-adapted to life in hot climates, which has taught them how to conserve energy effectively. Cats sleep to save energy. While other fur-covered mammals might sleep 8 hours (or less) in a cycle, cats can sleep longer to regulate their body temperature and, of course, for sheer enjoyment.

Weather Conditions

On cold or rainy days, you might notice your furry friend sleeping even longer and deeper. Quick sleep cycles occur at intervals of about 5 minutes, interspersed with lighter dozing phases.

Alternatively, cats may sleep in periods of 15–30 minutes, keeping their bodies ready to wake suddenly if needed.

Cats Recharge Their ‘Batteries’

Whether cats sleep to dream about their favorite tuna meal, a bird outside the window, or a recently delivered box or bag, you’ll notice your feline simply relishes every minute of their rest.

Cats sleep an average of 16–20 hours a day, but their prolonged slumber has logical explanations rooted in their biology, instincts, and environment. Enjoy observing your cat as they snooze, recharging for their next playful adventure or curious exploration.
