Thread curtains, or kiseya, have appeared in modern interiors relatively recently, although they have been known since ancient times. For the first time, such curtains began to be used in the East, where they covered the entrance to the dwelling, while perfectly allowing air to pass through. Today, thread curtains are used to decorate windows, doorways, and zone a room. In kitchens, it is undesirable to use heavy dense fabrics due to changes in humidity, temperature, and increased contamination, so a light fabric like kiseya is just right.
Kiseya is a fabric consisting of a mass of threads or ribbons, fastened at the top with a strip of dense fabric.
Advantages of these curtains:
- Good light transmission – they protect from direct ultraviolet radiation, but at the same time do not create semi-darkness in bad weather;
- Thread curtains promote free air exchange;
- They are not prone to dust and grease contamination as they are usually impregnated with special agents;
- They do not require special care, they are easy to wash;
- Easily mounted on a regular cornice, can be attached to eyelets, hooks, clips;
- Can be used as a partition or for balcony doors – they are easy to move even with occupied hands, without moving the curtains, they will return to their place;
- Multifunctionality – used not only on windows but also for functional division of space, for example, separating the working area from the dining area, decorating doorways, niches;
- You can independently shorten the curtains to the desired length by simply cutting them with scissors. There is no need to take them to a studio or hem them – the threads do not crumble or unravel;
- They have a low price compared to other types of curtains;
- Visually increase the height, do not clutter up the space, give lightness and volume, so they are well suited for small kitchens with low ceilings. Even bright shades do not look heavy;
- They have an effective design, a variety of types, materials, and colors, which makes it possible to decorate kitchens in any style;
- They combine well with other types of curtains – blinds, Roman blinds, tulle, curtains, lambrequins, and also organically combine with each other;
- They do not limit the options for decoration – you can braid them into braids, tie them in knots without losing their shape and appearance, use various decorative pickups, pins, additional decorations.
Thread curtains have few disadvantages, but they also exist:
- They can get tangled (but this mainly applies to models with beads);
- For fire safety reasons, they are not recommended to be hung near the stove, as well as near doors (cabinets, refrigerator) and other frequently used objects to avoid snagging;
- They attract the increased interest of small children and pets.
Washing and care
It is not recommended to wash such curtains frequently, but if you have to, you need to:
- Gather the curtain, without removing it from the cornice, into one or several loose braids or simply tie it with ropes along the entire length.
- Remove from the cornice.
- Wash by hand or in a washing machine on a delicate cycle, pre-packing in a laundry bag. Threads with beads are recommended to be washed only by hand. To do this, the kiseya, rolled up, must be soaked in a soapy solution for 10 minutes, then rinsed thoroughly. Do not twist or wring.
- After washing, remove the kiseya from the bag and hang it to dry immediately on the cornice. Thread curtains should be dried directly on the cornice.
- Untie the ribbons and straighten the curtain.
- You can also take the thread curtains to the dry cleaner. This is especially recommended for models with wooden beads, which can swell from water.
