Discover the joy of making Spanish turrón at home! This traditional dessert from the Valencian region of Spain is a delightful treat made with honey, almonds, and eggs. Similar to Turkish delight, turrón has a chewy texture and a rich, nutty flavor.
Ingredients:
- 1 cup of any nuts (almonds, hazelnuts, pistachios)
- ½ cup of light honey
- ⅓ cup of sugar
- 1 egg white
- ¼ cup of powdered sugar
Instructions:
- Prep: Roast and peel the nuts. Lightly grease a baking dish and line it with parchment paper.
- Honey Syrup: Melt the honey and sugar in a saucepan until the mixture thickens. A simple test to check the consistency: dip a wooden spoon into the hot mixture, then into a glass of cold water. The mixture should form a soft, pliable ball when rubbed between your fingers.
- Egg Whites: Beat the egg white until stiff peaks form. Gradually add the powdered sugar while continuing to beat. Set aside half of the meringue (you won’t need it).
- Combine: Fold the remaining meringue into the honey syrup. Stir in the warm nuts. Pour the mixture into the prepared dish and smooth the top. Cover with parchment paper and refrigerate overnight.
- Serve: Cut into slices using a hot, dry knife.
