World Vegan Day is celebrated by vegans worldwide on November 1st each year. This annual event was founded in 1994 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the UK-based Vegan Society.
The Vegan Society was established in November 1944 by animal rights advocate Donald Watson. Watson coined the term “vegan” to describe vegetarians who didn’t consume dairy or eggs. More broadly, veganism is a lifestyle that seeks to exclude all forms of animal exploitation and cruelty.
World Vegan Day was initiated by Louise Wallis, the Society’s president in 1994. The date of November 1st was chosen symbolically. Wallis knew that the Society was founded in November 1944 but couldn’t pinpoint the exact date. She decided on November 1st as it coincided with Halloween and other holidays that traditionally involve large gatherings.
World Vegan Day aims to promote animal rights and raise awareness of animal exploitation for food, clothing, entertainment, and other purposes. Activities held on this day include educational events, vegan-focused gatherings with food samples, and outreach campaigns. Each year, more and more cities around the world join the celebration.
