Microwave in the Kitchen: where and how to place it correctly

A microwave is a staple in almost every household, offering the convenience of quickly heating food or defrosting meat. To use this appliance comfortably and safely, it’s important to choose the right location in your kitchen.

Microwave Placement in the Kitchen  – Key Recommendations

Guidelines for microwave placement are typically found in each product’s manual, and it’s advised to follow them closely:

  • Avoid placing the microwave near heat-emitting appliances and equipment, such as radiators, ovens, or stovetops. If close proximity is unavoidable, consider installing proper thermal insulation.
  • Do not cover the microwave’s ventilation openings, especially those on the top panel, as this could obstruct its proper operation. Avoid placing objects such as bread bins, vases, kettles, towels, or potted plants on top of the appliance.
  • Avoid draping microwaves with covers or stacking towels on them.
  • Do not place the microwave close to furniture, large appliances, or walls, as accumulated dust in tight spaces may create a fire hazard.
  • It’s best not to place the microwave near the kitchen sink.
  • Ensure the microwave door opens freely without obstruction. Remember, most microwave doors are designed to open with the left hand.
  • Position the microwave at a height of 0.6-1.5 meters (2-5 feet) from the floor. A lower placement may require bending or squatting, while a higher one might necessitate stretching or using a step stool. Both can increase the risk of spilling hot food and causing burns.
  • Place the microwave in the kitchen close to a flat surface (such as a countertop or dining table) where you can set down hot food. This distance should be within 0.3-0.4 meters (about 1 foot) for easy reach.
  • A standard microwave (freestanding, not built-in) should be placed at a slight distance from walls and other appliances (like the refrigerator) to ensure proper air circulation. Leave about 8-10 cm (3-4 inches) on the sides and around 13-15 cm (5-6 inches) behind it.
