Every year on June 4th, the world celebrates International Corgi Day. Corgis are small dogs. Their body is quite long, and their ears are large. The roots of these dogs can be traced back to Wales, where they were bred to help herd livestock. The combination of their short stature and agility made them the best candidates for shepherds. Corgis are also known as “dwarf” dogs. The main purpose of International Corgi Day is to draw attention and love to this cute breed of dogs. Attention is also paid to the rescue and adoption of corgis abandoned by their owners.
History of International Corgi Day
The first International Corgi Day was celebrated by the Omaha Corgi Crew. This non-profit organization was created in December 2011. It started as a project of a group of four friends who wanted to draw more attention to corgis. Today, the organization advocates for the rescue and adoption of dogs of this breed. Since the Omaha Corgi Crew team believes that all dogs are great companions, it also participates in fundraising not only for corgis, but also for other breeds of dogs.
The history of corgis can be traced back to about the 12th century, when Flemish weavers went to Wales to live there. The Welsh Corgi Pembroke is most associated with weavers, as it was thanks to them that the population of this particular breed of corgi increased. The Welsh Corgi Cardigan is another common breed of corgi, but it is more massive and larger than the Pembroke breed. The Cardigan breed is also more associated with Norwegian settlers. One way or another, both breeds of Welsh Corgi were used as shepherd dogs. They were known as “drovers” because of their short stature and quick agility, which allowed them to easily maneuver between large groups of larger animals. Corgis bit their animals on the legs to make them move faster.
