In this article, you’ll learn how to remove scratches from glass on your own using household items and store-bought products. We’ll guide you through the process step-by-step.
There are several ways to remove damage from a scratched glass surface. We’ll share the advantages and disadvantages of each method, and you can choose the one that’s most convenient and accessible for you to remove scratches from glass on windows, tables, your favorite smartphone, watch, or glasses.
Ammonia Solution
This method can remove shallow scratches. Prepare a solution by dissolving 15 ml of dry ammonia in 600 ml of water. Then, moisten a cotton pad or microfiber cloth in the liquid and wipe the damaged area of the glass surface.
Toothpaste
It turns out that the paste we use to clean our teeth can also easily remove scratches from glass surfaces at home. Before you start removing scratches, you need to thoroughly rinse the glass: take a napkin, wet it under a stream of water, squeeze it well, and wipe the screens of smartphones and other glass surfaces that need to be repaired. The method of applying toothpaste is quite simple: apply the mixture to a cotton pad or tampon and apply it to the damaged area of watches, phones, and other computer equipment with a glass coating. Start polishing the surface in circular motions, first clockwise, then changing direction and moving counterclockwise. From time to time, remove the toothpaste residue and monitor the effect of its impact on the scratches. If the damage is still visible on the glass surface, continue polishing until you achieve almost complete removal of the scratches. Finally, wet a microfiber cloth under running water and wipe the glass, removing any remaining product. With minor damage, there should be no problems. After completing the work, the windows in the house, the windshield of the car, the glass coating of the phone, the lenses of sunglasses and ordinary glasses, and watches will be clean and free of damage. Recommendation! Use toothpaste for smokers with a whitening effect, as it is its composition that includes abrasive substances that contribute to the removal of scratches from glass.
Baking Soda
With this product, you can also get rid of scratches on the glass surface with your own hands. It’s very simple to do. First, you need to clean the glass of dust and other contaminants. Wipe the surface with a damp microfiber cloth, and only then proceed directly to using the soda powder.
Vegetable Oil
Using oil, you can remove small scratches from a glass surface with your own hands. A significant disadvantage of using this method is that the effect is short-lived (literally after a few days the procedure will have to be repeated) and is ineffective for removing deep scratches. Moisten a cotton cosmetic disc or tampon with liquid and wipe the scratched area of the window, table, glass of watches, smartphones, tablets until it shines and the moment when greasy marks disappear along with the scratches.
Nail Polish
For this, you only need a colorless top coat or base and a special agent (acetone) to remove the residue. So, with a brush with a transparent liquid, draw along the scratch, being careful not to stain the clean undamaged surface. Leave it for an hour: this time is quite enough for the varnish to fill the scratch. After the specified time, moisten a cotton pad with nail polish remover and get rid of excess product. To make the glass shine, you can polish it with oil.
GOI Paste
This is a universal tool for removing scratches from both plastic and glass surfaces. There are several varieties of GOI paste: fine (No. 1 and No. 2), medium, and coarse. In order to get rid of scratches on glass with your own hands, you need to use only a fine one, which is intended for polishing jewelry items. First, you should heat the paste in a water bath, and only then apply it to a cotton pad and polish the damaged scratched area of the glass. As in all previous methods, you need to rub in a circle, first clockwise, and then in the opposite direction. Finally, you need to remove the remaining paste with a microfiber cloth.
Polish for Metal or Furniture
Using any product that specializes in polishing, you can remove scratches from glass at home, mask small defects on sunglasses or glasses, screens of phones or tablets. Apply a small amount of polish to a cotton pad and rub in circular motions for 30 seconds the damaged area on the glass. At the end of the process, wet a microfiber cloth and wipe away any remaining product. It is not recommended to repeat the procedure, as this can lead to the formation of new scratches and microcracks.
All of the listed methods are suitable for thin glass
For thicker glass, such as windows, car windshields, tables, scratches can be removed using a polishing machine or a drill with a felt disc, masking tape, polish, film, spray bottle, paper towels, glass cleaner, and a marker.
