You can use various methods to remove a broken key:

The lock preservation. You can try to remove the wreckage without destroying the lock. First at all, it is recommended to lubricate the lock with oil or solid oil. Then the fragment can be removed with tweezers or pliers.

Lock removal / damage. If soft methods are not effective enough, you need to disassemble the lock. Sometimes it can be restored, but usually requires a complete replacement.

Rough method. Sometimes traditional methods of removing the fragment are useless. It is necessary to use a rough breaking of a door. Instead of trying to break down the door yourself, it is better to call to professionals.

What is not recommended to do

In some situations, key fragments try to be glued together. However, this method is ineffective because there is a possibility of jamming fragment, which further complicates a case. Also, chemical elements can get inside the lock – that will require replacement of the larva.

The lock preservation

How to remove a broken key from the larva? This can be done in the following ways:

Self-tapping screw. Applies to thick keys only. Drill a hole at the fracture site and screw inside the lock. Then take the self-tapping screw by pliers and take out together with a fragment.

Jigsaw saw. This is one of the most effective ways. The saw must be pushed under the key and turned so that the teeth will be located on top. The fragment will be captured and removed.

Fishing hook. This is a rather difficult but effective way. To remove the remnants of the key, you should unbend the hook by inserting a serrated tip into the hole. When you catch the key, carefully pull it towards you.

Pliers. Pliers are in demand in the presence of a large fragment protruding from the keyhole. First you need to lubricate the lock, and then remove the key. It is necessary to do everything carefully, without the use of excessive force.

Vibration. This method is recommended if the key was broken inside the lock. First at all, lubricate the pins. Then, with a thin screwdriver, the lock elements are set to the initial position. Then knock the lock with a hammer. After vibration put forward and take out the fragment by forceps.

Extraction of a fragment by a metal tube. Recommended for lever locks. Take a copper tube or brass and put it on a pin. Then melt the end of it with a soldering iron and attach it to the wreckage. After hardening, pull out together with the broken key.

Lock removal / damage

Extraction of the lock larva. Clamp the end face of the cylinder by a gas key and fold, and then the locking mechanism can be opened by the screw-driver. If the larva does not unfold, it is necessary to remove the decorative pads and return them after replacing the larva.

Connecting to the the core. With an awl or a pin you can pick up the larva of the lock. Insert the tool into the keyhole, then raise the bolts of the secret mechanism. You need to work more carefully, otherwise there is a risk of the lock damaging .

Cylinder drilling. If it is possible, you have to drill the cylinder mechanism. Then it turns a little and takes out from the door.

Knocking out the lock. The cylinder can be knocked out with a hammer, having previously removed an armor plate. However, in this case you needs to replace the lock .

Disassembly of the lock. It is possible to disassemble the lock after removal from a door leaf. This method is highly reliable. However, it can be implemented only if the door is open.

Rough methods

Doors should be broken only if other methods are ineffective, if there are children in a closed house or there is heavy smoke in the room. But you should not to do it by yourself, better invite highly qualified specialists who have extensive experience and specialized tools.

The main methods of breaking the door include cutting the bolts of the lock. It is possible to cut the lock, but it ruin the door. You can also cut the hinges, but this is not always possible because many doors have a special protection.
