How to Quickly Germinate Seeds Using a Sponge

Speeding up seed germination is an essential skill for any gardener. By achieving this, you can plant your crops a bit earlier. Additionally, this method allows you to assess seed quality in advance.

Gardeners use various techniques to accelerate seed sprouting, such as warming or exposing them to low temperatures.

However, experienced gardeners have discovered a lesser-known yet simpler and more effective method how to quickly germinate seeds using a sponge.

What You’ll Need:

  • Dishwashing sponges
  • A glass of water
  • A plastic bag

Step-by-Step Guide:

  1. Place the seeds on one sponge and cover them with another.
  2. This creates a “sponge sandwich” that should be soaked with water.
  3. Put the sponge setup inside a plastic bag. Lightly inflate the bag and tie it shut.
  4. Check periodically to ensure the sponges haven’t dried out—add water if necessary.
  5. Place the bag in a warm, dark location. Within 24 hours (or up to two days), the seeds should start sprouting.

A bonus tip: after germination seeds using a sponge, you can still use the sponges for household chores!
