How to Protect Your Trees from Beaver Damage

Typically, beavers cannot access areas with a dam that stands at least a meter above the water level. However, beavers are known to be intelligent animals – they can climb ladders, small drainage openings, or even piles of debris to reach their desired trees. So how can you protect your trees from beaver damage?

Beavers can climb stacks of firewood, bricks, or construction debris and use their teeth to grip onto dams and pull themselves out of the water in pursuit of trees. While they prefer to gnaw on and take trees located close to the water, they have been known to travel over 100 meters from the water to reach their target. This means they can access plants in yards and gardens, especially when food sources are scarce.

Adult beavers can fell multiple large trees in a single night. Therefore, preventing beaver damage is the best approach for homeowners. All waterfront property owners can take action to protect their valuable trees before any harm is done!

Metal Tree Guards

The most effective way to protect your trees is to wrap them with cylindrical guards made from sturdy galvanized welded wire mesh with 5–10 cm openings. The guard should be at least 1 meter tall. Wrap the mesh around the trunk, leaving at least 15 cm of space between the tree and the cage on all sides to allow room for growth and prevent beavers from leaning on or gnawing through the barrier. Large exposed roots outside the guard may also need protection.

Clusters of trees or shrubs growing close together can be enclosed within a single protective barrier to simplify the protection of valuable landscaping. Regularly inspect your guards to ensure they remain secure and in good condition. Properly installed wire guards should last for many years.

A Mixture of Latex Paint and Sand

“Painting” tree trunks with a mixture of latex paint and fine-grain or rocky sand is an effective method for preventing beavers from gnawing on trees and wooden structures. Beavers dislike the gritty texture in their mouths. Latex allows the bark to “breathe,” while the rough texture deters beavers. However, this method is not recommended for newly planted trees under 2 meters tall, as it may interfere with their ability to breathe properly.

Use 300 grams of fine sand per 1 liter of latex paint. Paint trees up to a height of 1–1.2 meters. The coating should be reapplied every two to three years.

Paint stores can match the color to your tree bark if you are particular about aesthetics. Alternatively, clear latex paint mixed with sand can be used. Avoid applying this method to old trees that may serve as habitats for climbing birds.

This technique is also effective for protecting dams and wooden bridges from beaver damage.

Shoreline Barriers (Fencing or Vegetation)

If your property has a large shoreline covered with vegetation and lacks a protective dam, you may want to install a barrier in vulnerable low-lying areas to protect your trees. However, all shoreline barriers must be approved by relevant environmental authorities.

Fencing

A sturdy fence with a dark green or black coating is both effective and visually unobtrusive in wooded areas. The fence should be at least 80 cm tall and securely anchored with posts driven into the ground every 2.5–3 meters in vulnerable or low-lying areas.

Protective Vegetation

To maintain the natural beauty and aesthetics of your shoreline, it is advisable to plant shrubs at least one meter from the water’s edge. A few low-growing ornamental shrubs along the shoreline can help preserve its natural beauty. Environmental organizations may recommend suitable plant species for this purpose.

Repellents

Spray repellents are a less reliable form of protection but can be used on young saplings, leafy plants, and shrubs as a short-term deterrent. Repellents work best when other food sources are available nearby. They also require frequent reapplication.

By implementing one of these methods to protect your trees from beaver damage, you can avoid problems with these large aquatic rodents.
