How to brighten a windowless room

A room without windows may seem destined to be dark and gloomy. The absence of natural light deprives it of space and air. But interior design experts are confident that knowing some professional designer tricks, you can correct the situation and visually make any windowless room significantly brighter. So, how to brighten a windowless room:

Bet on light interior shades

In a room without windows, everything should compensate for the lack of natural light: from rugs to prints. First of all, pay attention to large surfaces. Paint all the walls in the room only in warm colors: white, orange, beige, etc. Choose furniture in light colors as well, as dark ones will add gloom to the room. To make the room visually appear brighter, make sure that the upholstery on chairs and armchairs, as well as the patterns on other surfaces, are correspondingly vibrant and colorful. The flooring (linoleum, carpets, tiles) should also correspond to the overall light ensemble.

Create contrasts

To emphasize bright shades and patterns on walls and other surfaces, create a contrast by combining dark accents and light tones. For example, a dark edging will very effectively emphasize the warm color of the ceiling, or a dark furniture body will look expressive with bright upholstery, etc.

Don’t skimp on lighting

When choosing light sources for a windowless room, avoid chandeliers and pendant lights that hang from the ceiling – they visually make the room smaller, taking up unnecessary space. Built-in ceiling spotlights are best suited for such rooms. To make a windowless room brighter, place additional lighting fixtures: floor lamps, wall sconces, table lamps throughout the room. Use not the usual fluorescent lamps, but full-spectrum lamps that imitate sunlight. Interior designers also advise expanding the space in windowless rooms through the use of mirrors and the removal of unnecessary partitions and columns. Indoor plants that do not require sunlight will help breathe life into such rooms. Otherwise, everything depends on your sense of style and imagination, which will help you create the desired comfort and coziness.
