Even in an office environment, where daily wet cleaning is conducted, there’s still a likelihood of computer equipment accumulating dust. The frequency of preventive maintenance largely depends on timing. For example, a desktop computer can undergo cleaning every few months or even just twice a year. But how often should you clean your laptop?
How Often Should You Clean Your Laptop
While it’s relatively easy to determine dust buildup in a desktop computer, the situation is more complex with laptops. The laptop’s casing is like a turtle shell – you only have visual access to the keyboard and display. All internal components, including the processor, which are prone to dust accumulation, are hidden and have limited accessibility.
Despite this, users still have distinct signs of dust accumulation that will serve as reminders for laptop maintenance.
Signs of Dust Buildup in Your Laptop:
- Overheating: One of the primary indicators is overheating of the internal components. Temperature increase can cause screen lag or distortions and may even lead to a complete shutdown if critical temperatures are reached.
- Increased Fan Speed: A telltale sign is when the fan speed intensifies, often accompanied by noise and hot air. This tends to occur more frequently during summer or under high processor load.
To prevent overheating, consider installing specialized software that allows real-time monitoring of temperature for each component: processor, motherboard, hard drive, graphics card, and so on. Programs like Everest or Advanced System Care can help with this task.
An optimal overall temperature range is between 50°C and 70°C, varying with CPU load. If the actual temperatures consistently exceed these ranges, it’s time to visit a service center for a laptop cleaning.
Note: Some gaming laptop models may exceed 80°C due to the powerful graphics cards that generate significant heat during gameplay. These laptops are more prone to overheating, which will cause them to shut down only upon reaching 100°C! As a result, preventive maintenance for such laptops should be conducted more frequently (approximately every six months).
Critical Signs:
In addition to general maintenance, some indicators require immediate intervention from a repair specialist. Typically, in these cases, the laptop either fails to start or is unsafe to use further. Critical signs include:
- Weak or non-existent fan rotation,
- Liquid spilled on the keyboard,
- The smell of burning insulation or smoke.
For your laptop to last as long as possible and keep your personal information safe, aim for regular cleaning at least once a year.
