Homemade Ayran

Ayran is a refreshing fermented milk drink popular in Turkish, Caucasian, and Balkan cuisines. While traditionally made with a specific starter culture, we’ll use natural yogurt for a simpler version.

Ingredients:

  • 300 ml plain yogurt
  • 150 ml sparkling mineral water
  • Fresh herbs (dill, parsley, cilantro, basil)
  • Pinch of salt
  • Crushed ice

Instructions:

Ayran separates quickly, so it’s best prepared just before serving and kept chilled.

  1. Chill ingredients: Chill the yogurt and mineral water beforehand.
  2. Prep herbs: Wash and dry the herbs thoroughly. Chop them finely.
  3. Blend: Combine the chilled yogurt and mineral water in a blender. Blend until smooth.
  4. Add flavor: Stir in the chopped herbs and salt.
  5. Serve: Pour the ayran into glasses and place the glasses on a tray filled with ice.

Your homemade ayran is ready to enjoy!
