Holiday Tree Canapés with Smoked Salmon and Cream Cheese

These miniature Holiday Tree Canapés are an easy-to-make, yet utterly spectacular appetizer that will steal the show on your festive table. Fresh cucumber, creamy cheese, savory smoked salmon, and aromatic dill come together in a perfect blend of flavors. Adorned with tiny “ornaments” of salmon roe, these bites are truly holiday-ready!

Ingredients:

  • 1 large English cucumber

  • Smoked salmon or lightly salted salmon

  • Cream cheese (full-fat recommended)

  • 2 teaspoons thick sour cream or Crème Fraîche

  • Fresh dill (a generous amount for decorating)

  • Salmon roe (red caviar)

  • Lemon juice and a pinch of lemon zest

  • Optional: Small cubes of yellow cheese, decorative gelatin, or vegetable marmalade for the “star” topper

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Base: Slice the cucumber into thick discs—these will serve as the sturdy “stands” for your little trees.

  2. Add the Fish: Place a small piece of smoked or cured salmon on top of each cucumber slice. The salmon can be rolled or folded neatly.

  3. Make the Cream: In a bowl, mix the cream cheese, sour cream, a few drops of lemon juice, and a tiny bit of lemon zest until the mixture is smooth and pipeable.

  4. Create the “Snow Cap”: Transfer the cream cheese mixture into a piping bag fitted with a star tip (or a simple Ziploc bag with a corner snipped off). Pipe the cream cheese onto the salmon in a tall, thick spiral.

  5. Form the Tree: Gently cover and surround the cream cheese spiral with small sprigs of fresh dill, carefully shaping it into a miniature Christmas tree.

  6. Decorate: Add a few grains of salmon roe (caviar) to the dill as tiny holiday ornaments.

  7. Add the Star: To complete the festive look, place a small, star-shaped piece of yellow cheese, gelatin, or decorative marmalade on the very top of the tree.

Chef’s Tip:

Prepare this appetizer right before serving to ensure the cucumber remains crisp and the dill stays fresh and vibrant. These canapés taste best when served chilled
