Herring “Hoe” with Carrots and Onions

We suggest preparing Herring “Hoe” with Carrots and Onions. This is a traditional Korean appetizer made with meat or fish and vegetables. The key feature of the dish is that the ingredients are not subjected to heat treatment.

Ingredients:

  • 9% vinegar – 200 ml
  • Fresh-frozen herring – 3 pcs.
  • Carrots – 3 pcs.
  • Onions – 2 pcs.
  • Soy sauce – 4 tbsp
  • Oil – 2 tbsp
  • Sesame seeds – 2 tbsp
  • Garlic – 2 cloves
  • Salt – 1 tsp

Instructions:

  1. Allow the frozen herring to thaw at room temperature. Peel the onions, garlic, and carrots. Remove the bones from the fish and cut it into pieces. Pour the vinegar over the fish and let it sit for half an hour. Grate the carrots using a special Korean-style grater, slice the onions into half rings, peel the garlic, and crush it using a press.
  2. Drain the fish fillet and add the vegetables, soy sauce, oil, sesame seeds, and salt to taste. Mix all the ingredients well, and refrigerate the Herring “Hoe” with carrots and onions for two hours.

Tip:
Serve Herring “Hoe” as a side dish or appetizer, for example, alongside alcohol.
