Furniture care: a material guide

Furniture can be broadly categorized based on its material: chipboard, MDF, and natural wood. Each material has its own unique characteristics that must be considered both during the selection and design process, as well as throughout its entire lifespan. The specific care requirements for furniture made from different materials also need to be taken into account.

Caring for Chipboard Furniture

It is a common misconception that chipboard is afraid of water. This is indeed true, so when purchasing products made from this material, pay attention to the quality of the surface finish. Specifically, all edges should be seamlessly sealed (covered with edging). Only this condition guarantees a long service life for the panels. Of course, if you pour water on the furniture, nothing good will come of it. However, a reliable coating will retain moisture on its surface for the time it takes to collect and dry it.

Caring for Natural Wood Furniture

Caring for solid wood furniture requires more effort than any other material. Natural materials are capricious. They cannot tolerate high/low humidity and temperature, and they should be protected from direct sunlight (to avoid fading). Therefore, if you decide to purchase a wardrobe made of natural wood species, be prepared to constantly maintain a temperature and humidity regime in the room (humidity 65%, temperature not below +15 °C). Gentle cleaning with mild detergents and wax-based products (gentle care) is permissible.

Caring for Polished Furniture at Home

As a rule, shiny surfaces clearly show fingerprints and splashes. Therefore, wiping the varnished surface with a dry (not wet – as it will leave streaks) felt or flannel cloth will have to be done quite often. The best remedy for removing stains is water with a small amount of ammonia (ratio 6/1).

Caring for MDF Furniture

MDF differs from other materials in its increased moisture resistance. It can be safely used even for bathrooms. Recommendation: pay attention to the quality of the coating – it should be perfectly smooth and seamless. To remove dust, use a soft dry cloth. With white and glossy furniture, these manipulations will have to be repeated more often, since every speck of dust is more visible on white.

There are no special rules for caring for dark matte furniture. As you may have noticed, everything depends on the material from which they are made.
