Cozy Homemade Apple Cider

There’s nothing quite like a steaming mug of homemade apple cider to chase away the autumn chill. It’s more than just a drink; it’s a feeling – a comforting hug in a cup that fills your home with the most wonderful aromas and makes any day feel like a special occasion. Imagine the scent of cinnamon, cloves, and fresh apples swirling through your kitchen… pure bliss!

This recipe is simple to follow and yields a delicious, aromatic cider that your whole family will adore.

Ingredients:

  • 1 orange (about 140g)
  • 1.3 kg (about 3 pounds) fresh apples – a mix of sweet and tart varieties works best!
  • 4 cinnamon sticks
  • 2 teaspoons whole cloves
  • 2 teaspoons whole allspice berries
  • 1 whole nutmeg
  • 110g (about 1/2 cup, packed) brown sugar
  • 2.4 liters (about 10 cups or 2.5 quarts) water

Instructions:

  1. Prep your fruit: Thoroughly wash the apples and orange. Using a knife or vegetable peeler, carefully remove 4 strips of zest from the orange. Then, peel the rest of the orange and cut the flesh into chunks.
  2. Combine in a pot: Core and quarter the apples (no need to peel them, as we’ll be straining later!). Place the apple quarters, orange chunks, and orange zest into a large pot – at least 8-liter capacity (about 8.5 quarts) is ideal to prevent overflow.
  3. Add the magic: Toss in the cinnamon sticks, whole cloves, allspice berries, and the whole nutmeg. Sprinkle in the brown sugar, then pour in all the water.
  4. Simmer to perfection: Bring the mixture to a rolling boil over high heat. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover the pot (but leave a small gap for steam to escape), and let it gently simmer for about an hour, or until the apples are incredibly soft and tender.
  5. Muddle and steep: Use a potato masher or a large spoon to gently crush the softened fruit in the pot. This helps release even more flavor! Continue to simmer on low for another hour.
  6. Strain for smoothness: Carefully strain the entire mixture through a fine-mesh sieve into another large bowl or pot. Use a spoon to press down on the cooked fruit and spices, squeezing out every last drop of that fragrant liquid.
  7. Serve and enjoy: Your homemade apple cider is ready! Serve it warm for ultimate comfort, or chill it for a refreshing cold drink.

Enjoy every heartwarming sip!

Storage & Creative Uses:

  • Storing your cider: Leftover cider can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 7 days. You can also freeze it for up to 3 months – just be sure to leave some headspace in your container, as liquids expand when frozen.
  • Beyond the mug: This delicious cider isn’t just for drinking! It’s a fantastic addition to your autumn baking, lending a wonderful flavor to muffin or donut batter. You can also use it as an aromatic base for seasonal cocktails and mocktails. It’s truly a must-have for those cozy days when all you want is a warm blanket and a good book!
