Best plants for a child’s room

A child’s room is a special place in every home. Everything here should be designed for comfort, and the interior should convey a unique atmosphere of coziness and security. Creating a perfect environment for your child’s favorite corner is impossible without indoor plants. But which plants are best for a child’s room?

Not all types and varieties of houseplants are suitable for a child’s room. Plants should be chosen carefully, considering all factors and with the same scrutiny as we choose furniture, wall and floor coverings, and textiles. It’s not enough to choose those that only purify the air, because indoor green inhabitants should also improve its characteristics. And don’t forget about the appearance: plants for children should be beautiful and safe. After all, you don’t want your child to get pricked by a cactus needle?

Let’s try to figure out which plants will best fit into the interior of a child’s room and will not harm your little one.

Green and Flowering Plants

For landscaping a children’s room, you should choose plants with soft contours, calm shades of green, rounded leaves if possible, and a cheerful silhouette. Candidates for the role of a houseplant for this special room should not only suppress the development of microorganisms and purify the air from harmful impurities but also enrich it with beneficial substances. Agave, ficus, myrtle, chlorophytum, philodendron, spathiphyllum, and sansevieria will perfectly fit into a child’s room.

Among these plants, you can choose the right ones for different interior solutions. For example, in a room with soft contours and a predominance of round shapes, a strict sansevieria will look great, and in a room with strict geometric lines, it is better to put a ficus or agave. Don’t neglect the thematic design: the selected plants should harmonize with the overall interior, including the wall covering.

But from the group of flowering plants, not so many species can be used for landscaping a child’s room – only the classic zonal geranium and the bright squat primrose.

Citrus Fruits

Citrus fruits will look like cheerful tropical inhabitants in a child’s room. They are among the best natural air purifiers but will also bring a lot of joy with their wonderful aroma: during flowering and fruit formation, the whole room of your child will be filled with sweet fragrance, and with each touch to the leaves, the characteristic aroma of lemons, oranges, or tangerines will remain on your hands.

Citrus fruits are also a great option for starting to teach your child responsible care for houseplants. By observing the growth of plants, regularly watering and feeding the tree, the child will receive a long-awaited reward for their efforts – ripe fruits grown by their own hands.

Mini-Garden on the Windowsill

On the windowsill of a child’s room, you can also create a mini-garden in a flower pot, although it is better to grow not traditional greens in it, but aromatic herb compositions that will play the role of a “live aroma lamp”. Such a mini-flower garden will be especially relevant in the room of a child prone to hyperactivity.

For a child’s room, it is best to choose a fragrant trio of lavender, lemon balm, and mint. They soothe, refresh the air, and help fight harmful microorganisms.

Features of Care

Houseplants will be able to effectively clean the air in a room only when they receive proper care. Plants for a child’s room require more careful care than other green inhabitants: dust from the leaves should be washed off at least twice a week, helping the plants cope with polluted air. At the same time, small leaves are best cleaned with a vacuum cleaner, while large ones should be wiped with a damp cloth. Twice a month, be sure to spray the plants or arrange a soft warm shower for them.
