Beer-Battered Onion Rings

We offer you a recipe for Beer-Battered Onion Rings.

Ingredients:

  • 1 large onion
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 3 teaspoons cornflour (cornstarch)
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of turmeric powder
  • ¼ teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 200 ml cold beer
  • ¼ teaspoon baking powder
  • Oil for frying

For the coating:

  • 1-2 tablespoons all-purpose flour
  • Salt to taste
  • A pinch of ground black pepper

Preparation:

  1. Mix the all-purpose flour, cornflour, salt, pepper, and turmeric powder. Slowly pour in part of the beer to form a smooth mixture, then continue adding the beer gradually until the batter becomes smooth and creamy (the consistency should be like pancake batter, but don’t beat the batter too vigorously, or the beer bubbles will break down). Whisk until everything is combined. Then, add the baking powder (just before frying) and stir.

  2. Mix the flour, salt, and pepper for the coating.

  3. Peel the onion and slice it into discs that are more than 1 cm thick. Separate the rings. Very small onion rings can be used or discarded, depending on your preference. Coat the onion rings in the prepared coating mixture, ensuring each ring is fully covered.

  4. Heat the oil for frying. To check if the oil is ready, drop a small piece of onion or a few drops of the batter into the oil, and if they rise quickly, the oil is hot enough.

  5. Using a skewer or stick, dip the onion rings into the batter, ensuring they are fully coated. Remove the rings from the batter, shaking off any excess. Drop the battered rings into the hot oil and fry for 2-3 minutes on medium heat (avoid overcrowding the pan), separating them if they stick together. Remove the rings from the oil and drain them on a paper towel or a cooling rack.

Your Beer-Battered Onion Rings are ready. Serve them immediately. Enjoy!

Tips and Variations:

  • Between frying batches of onion rings, remove the crumbs floating in the oil to prevent black bits from sticking to the batter.
  • It’s best to use white onions. Red onions can be used, but their higher sugar content makes them more prone to burning.
  • You can use any other carbonated beverage instead of beer.
  • Always use cold beer, as it creates a better reaction when the batter hits the hot oil, which in turn contributes to extra crispiness.
