During the use of plastic windows, due to improper installation or careless handling, minor malfunctions of the hardware can occur. A common issue is a broken handle on a plastic window. Such problems are not critical and can be fixed independently.
Reasons
The reasons can vary: from poor-quality hardware to improper use or accidental damage. The window handle is the weakest element of a plastic window. Handles fail more often than other parts.
Solution
First, it’s advisable to check if the window is still under warranty. If so, the installers may perform the repair. Review the documents that outline the parties’ obligations and rights and clarify the warranty service details. If you can’t find the contract or application, look for receipts or bank statements for payment to the installation company. In principle, if the company has a good reputation, you can simply contact them and inquire about the warranty period based on their customer database, but situations vary, and supporting documents never hurt.
If there are no documents or the warranty period has expired, there are two obvious solutions: repair the broken handle or replace it with a new one. Everything depends on the specific damage. Let’s consider the options.
Cracked Handle
A cracked handle is almost impossible to repair; it’s better to replace it. Naturally, you first need to remove the old one. To do this, turn the decorative plate clockwise, then use a special screwdriver to unscrew the mounting screws. After that, the handle can be easily removed. Then, install a new one in reverse order, provided you have one.
Jammed Handle
If the handle on the plastic window is jammed while the window is open, you simply need to unlock the tilt latch that prevents the window from closing when the handle is in the wrong position. To do this, press the locking plate located at the end of the window towards the seal. The handle should return to the desired position without any problems. However, the sash must be strictly vertical. If it’s at an angle, return it to the specified position.
Handle Won’t Turn
If the handle won’t turn, start by purchasing a lubricating spray. This type of lubricant penetrates much deeper than liquid oil. Spray all moving parts, especially the upper corner gear mechanism. If this doesn’t work, try unscrewing the adjustment bolts of the frame hinges. Then remove the hinge cover and try to lift the sash by turning the fastener with a hex key. It’s also a good idea to lubricate other mechanisms.
